Pool Leak Detection in Las Vegas
Refilling more often than usual? We find out whether it's evaporation or a leak, pinpoint where the water is going, and explain your repair options before any work starts.
Evaporation or a leak? Start with the bucket test
Every Las Vegas pool loses water to the sun and wind. The tricky part is knowing when the loss is more than evaporation. You can check that yourself in a day with a simple bucket test:
- Fill a bucket with pool water and set it on the first or second step so it sits in the pool, with the water inside the bucket level with the pool water outside.
- Mark both water lines. Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool level on the outside of the bucket or the tile.
- Wait 24 hours with the pump on its normal schedule and no refilling or swimming.
- Compare the drops. If the pool dropped noticeably more than the water in the bucket, the extra loss is probably a leak. Run it again with the pump off; if the difference changes, that hints at where the leak is.

Signs your pool may be leaking
- You add water more than once or twice a week, even in cooler months.
- Your water bill jumped and the autofill seems to run constantly.
- Soggy ground, sunken pavers or new cracks in the deck near the pool or equipment.
- Air bubbles in the return jets, or the pump losing prime.
- Algae that keeps coming back because fresh water keeps diluting your chemicals.
- Cracks in the plaster or tile, or water dripping at the equipment pad.
How we find the leak
A leak can be in the pool shell, the underground plumbing, or the equipment. Guessing wastes money, so we work through it step by step:
- Equipment pad inspection. Pumps, filters, heaters, valves and unions are checked first, because drips here are often the simplest fix.
- Pressure testing the lines. Each suction and return line is isolated and pressure tested to show whether the plumbing is holding.
- Dye testing. A small amount of dye near fittings, lights, skimmers, steps and cracks shows where water is being pulled out.
- Listening equipment. Where it's needed, acoustic tools help locate leaks under the deck so any digging is kept to a small, targeted area.
When the test is done, you get a plain explanation of what we found, photos where possible, and the repair options with prices. You decide what happens next.
Common leak spots in Las Vegas pools
Desert soil shifts with heat and the occasional heavy monsoon rain, and that movement stresses pool plumbing and fittings over time. Common culprits include skimmer throats that separate from the shell, light niches with failed seals, cracked return fittings, worn pump seals and unions at the equipment pad, and underground lines that crack where they turn. Older plaster that has etched or delaminated can also let water through. Many of these are small, quick repairs once they're found.
From finding to fixing
We can handle most leak repairs ourselves, from fitting and seal repairs to general pool repair and equipment repair. If a leak is tied to a worn or cracked surface, resurfacing may be the long-term fix, and we'll explain why. Call for a current quote.
Pool leak detection FAQ
How much water loss is normal in Las Vegas?
It varies with the season, wind and whether the pool is heated or has a water feature. That's why the bucket test is useful: it compares your pool's loss with plain evaporation on the same day, in the same spot.
Do I need to drain the pool for leak detection?
No. Leak detection is done with the pool full and the system running, so we can see where water is being lost.
Will you have to break up my deck?
Usually not. Most leaks are found at fittings, lights, skimmers or the equipment pad. If a line under the deck has failed, we locate it first so any opening is small and targeted, and we'll talk it through with you before any digging.
Can my autofill hide a leak?
Yes. An autofill tops the pool up quietly, so a leak can run for weeks before anyone notices. Watch your water bill and listen for the autofill running often.
Can you fix the leak on the same visit?
Small repairs, like a fitting or a pump seal, can sometimes be done the same day if we have the parts. Larger repairs are quoted and scheduled once you approve them.
